SURVEILLANCE TRANSMISSIONS : : ORGAN INTERFACING

A piece for the organ of Frikirkjan, (surveillance) data and projector that explores how alternative source material can act as the basis for a musical score. a camera facing the public space will conduct the music piece played by the organ while the experience of the space of the church is altered with a light installation. The public is invited inside to an exciting conversation between old and new technology played by the pulsating life of the city. The piece is composed and engineered by Ronja Jóhannsdóttir, Jóhannes Stefánsson, Ida Schuften Juhl, Robin Morabito, Óskar Þór Arngrímsson og Örlygur Steinar Arnalds. redirect to videos from each day below.

 - data collection: public webcam facing tjörnin and frikírkjan, reykjavík -

the organ received midi information (numbers) that’s generated from the moving parts of the webcam footage. the data is processed in the visual programming language max/msp which eventually decides which notes are being triggered on the organ.

the only addition to the organ sound is that of clicking from the inner mechanism of the organ, picked up by microphones, added slight delay and amplified. in addition, a bass amp accompanies the organ for additional deep end.

the visuals are generated with an audio reactive feedback noise system made with max/msp.
