About the piece: “The video work TRANSITION shows film sequences of three melting glaciers in Iceland and Tirol: Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, a cave of Kötlujökull and the Kauerntaler glacier in Tirol. While the cave of Kötlujökull no longer exists, they are using tarpaulins on the ice of Kauerntaler in an attempt to slow down the melting of the glacier. In Iceland they are mourning Okjökull, the first glacier to completely disappear. Once a glacier melts, it bleeds, dies and is irretrievably gone.

The video portrays moving bodies of hybrid beings: half human, half water and ice. Their gestures portray the mutual influence between human and nature. The actors and actresses let themselves be led by impulses that connect with the natural environment.

TRANSITION was created after a 3-week stay in Tirol [by the artist] and a nearly 2-year stay in Iceland. In the face of immense snow masses, the human becomes aware of its fragility. In opposition, the vulnerability of nature becomes evident through its melting glaciers.

The use of water as an ingrained part of the score symbolises the voice of nature that goes into a dialogue with human voices stating hopes for a different future.

The situation is dark and scary but as long as there are thoughts of change there is still a chance of change.

The protagonist voice deals with how we can preserve our living space; what contribution each individual can make; in what world we want to live and how we want to leave our planet to our descendants.”
